Space Economy: Take your start up to space _By Students

27/01/2022 - 30/06/2022

Call for Ideas

Today we hear more and more about the Space Economy. In recent years, space has become a fundamental resource for monitoring the Earth, for the use of telecommunications, for observation and geo-location services.

The use of satellite services and the data collected from space are already part of our daily life, and they are assets able to anticipate the needs of our society, improving our lives.

The constantly growing, combined, use of space assets with Information and Communication Technologies is representing the backbone of the New Space Economy.

The space sector, which for a long time has benefited mainly from institutional financial support, is witnessing an ambitious intervention of private investors. Space technologies, therefore, appropriately combined with the most advanced Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), represent the technological and business trend that will characterize the possibility for many companies, in various sectors, to increase their competitiveness on a global scale through innovation at all levels – from product/service, to processes, up to the overall business model.

In this context, the recently founded ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Turin will support the growth of new Italian space-related startups. The activities, carried out in coordination with ASI and ESA, aim to offer to the selected startups several opportunities for technological development, business coaching and mentoring, legal advice, access to capital for growth and integration into the Italian and European industrial ecosystem.

Challenge

The participating students will be asked to conceive new and innovative technologies through the combination of current space-related technologies and ICT.

The fields of application may be of different nature:

  • Earth observation
  • Satellite communication
  • Mobility
  • Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Robotics/mechatronics or materials
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Satellite navigation or mobile services

The aim of the Challenge will be the creation of a new startup, able to take advantage of the support provided by ESA BIC Turin and its partner network.

The Challenges are worth 8 curricular or extracurricular credits.
